Accelerated Online EdD Programs: 10 Fast Options for 2026

These 10 online EdD (Doctor of Education) programs take less than three years from start to finish. We checked every length, campus visit and price on each school’s website.

Accelerated online EdD programs take about two to three years if you start with a master’s degree. Edgewood, Lipscomb, Nebraska Methodist and Rockhurst each list two years, and NYU lists 24 to 28 months. Maryville, the top school in our ranking, takes 32 months. Only ABD completion programs, for students who have already finished doctoral coursework, take as little as 18 months.

Key facts

  • Youngstown State has the lowest total tuition on our list. Its 60-credit EdD costs $26,450.40 for Ohio residents and $26,750.40 for everyone else.
  • Trevecca’s EdD is 100% online with no residency requirement. Miami, Rockhurst and Edgewood also describe their programs as fully online.
  • Fast programs are demanding. At Gwynedd Mercy, 62% of EdD students graduate within three years and 76% within four years.

The 10 Best Accelerated Online EdD Programs

We started with 103 schools named in the top Google results for accelerated online EdD programs. We kept only programs that meet three rules:

  • The school’s own website says you can finish the whole degree, including the final project, in less than three years.
  • You can apply with a master’s degree. You do not need earlier doctoral credits or a specialist degree.
  • The program is mostly online, with no more than a few short campus visits.

Then we ordered the programs by our overall school ranking. That ranking uses U.S. Department of Education data on graduation rates, retention rates, graduate earnings and cost. We checked every program detail on each school’s website in September 2026.

Length is the shortest time each school lists. Estimated tuition is the price per credit multiplied by the credits in the program, unless the school posts its own total. Fees, books and travel are usually extra. Maryville, NYU, Nebraska Methodist and Gwynedd Mercy list 2026–27 rates. Miami and Edgewood list 2025–26 rates. The other schools do not name a year.

Three Ways to Finish an EdD Faster

Many lists of “fast” EdD programs mix three different kinds of programs. Each one has different entry rules, so check which one fits you before you compare lengths.

  • Full accelerated EdD: You start with a master’s degree and complete the whole doctorate. Every program in our top 10 is this type. Expect about two to three years.
  • ABD completion: ABD means “all but dissertation.” These programs are for students who finished doctoral coursework at another school but did not complete the dissertation. For example, Gwynedd Mercy’s ABD Completion Program takes as few as 18 months.
  • EdS to EdD: An EdS (Education Specialist) is a degree between a master’s and a doctorate. Some EdD programs admit only students who already have one. Northwest Nazarene’s EdD counts EdS credits toward the degree and is designed to take 26 months. William Carey’s online EdD requires a specialist degree to apply.

Transfer credits can also shorten a program. For example, Nebraska Methodist accepts up to 12 transfer credits, if faculty approve them. Ask each school how many of your earlier graduate credits will count.

What Makes an EdD Program Fast

Accelerated programs do not skip work. They organize the same work so that less time is wasted. Most use some of these methods:

  • Classes all year: Terms continue through the summer. At NYU, courses run through the summer and January terms.
  • Short courses: Miami, Edgewood and Gwynedd Mercy use seven-week courses, often taken one at a time.
  • Dissertation work during courses: At Maryville, Youngstown State, Trevecca and Gwynedd Mercy, you work on the dissertation while you take classes. In traditional programs, you often start it only after all courses end.
  • A practical final project: NYU, Rockhurst and Nebraska Methodist replace the traditional dissertation with a project on a real problem at work.

Speed has a cost. You will have more work each week and few long breaks. If work or family needs your time, you may finish later than planned. At Gwynedd Mercy, 62% of EdD students finish within three years and 76% finish within four years. “As few as” means the fastest possible pace, not the average.

Advertised Length vs. Real Length

Some programs look fast in ads and lists but take longer on the school’s own website. Here are three examples we found:

  • University of Louisiana Monroe: The EdD in Curriculum and Instruction lists “as few as 24 months.” However, that is the coursework only. The school says the final research usually takes another 12 to 24 months.
  • Kennesaw State University: Some college lists show 24 to 36 months. Kennesaw’s own page says three to four years, depending on your dissertation.
  • Arkansas State University: The online EdD in Educational Leadership takes as few as 40 months, which is more than three years.

Before you apply, ask each school these questions:

  • Does the listed length include the dissertation or final project?
  • Is that length for full-time or part-time study?
  • Do I need transfer credits to finish in that time?
  • What happens, and what does it cost, if my dissertation takes longer?

What an Accelerated EdD Costs

Estimated tuition on our list ranges from about $26,450 at Youngstown State to $108,785 at NYU. A faster program does not always cost less in total. However, you usually pay for more credits each year, so your yearly bill is higher. For example, NYU’s estimate shows $50,655 in tuition and fees for the three terms in 2027.

This matters because federal student loan rules changed on July 1, 2026. New graduate students can no longer borrow Grad PLUS loans. You can still borrow up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and total federal borrowing for graduate school is limited to $100,000. If you were already borrowing before July 1, 2026, the old limits may still apply to you for a short time. Ask your financial aid office. For details, see the U.S. Department of Education’s loan limit charts.

Ask your employer or school district whether it offers tuition assistance. You may also qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness if you work for a government agency, a public school or college, or a nonprofit. For lower prices, see our guide to the cheapest online EdD programs.

Careers and Pay After an EdD

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), college and university administrators earned a median of $104,590 in May 2025. K-12 principals earned a median of $105,870. The median is the middle salary: half of workers earn more, and half earn less. Both jobs usually require a master’s degree. An EdD can help you compete for senior roles, such as superintendent or dean. Our EdD salary and careers guide covers more jobs.

Other Fast Programs to Consider

  • Spalding University: Spalding’s online EdD in Leadership takes two years. It is 100% online, with no residency and no GRE. It has 60 credits at $850 per credit, for a total of $51,000 plus fees. It just missed our top 10 based on overall school ranking. Spalding program page
  • Lamar University: Lamar, in Texas, often appears on lists of the fastest online EdDs. It ranks lower in our overall school ranking, so it is not in our top 10.

Terms to Know

  • Accelerated: A program designed to finish faster than usual, often through year-round classes and short courses.
  • ABD (all but dissertation): A student who finished doctoral coursework but not the dissertation.
  • EdS (Education Specialist): A graduate degree between a master’s and a doctorate.
  • Embedded dissertation: Dissertation work that is built into your courses, so you do not do it all at the end.
  • Dissertation in Practice: A doctoral research project that studies a real problem at work and proposes a solution.
  • Capstone: A final project that applies what you learned. Some programs use it instead of a dissertation.
  • Residency: A short, required visit, usually to campus, that lasts a few days to one week.
  • Cohort: A group of students who start the program together and take courses as a group.
